Make This Chocolate Frosted Banana Cake
I always start by gathering all of the ingredients needed in a recipe and weighing and measuring everything before I start to cook or bake. This part is really important and key in keeping everything organized.
You can find the full printable version of this recipe at the bottom of this post.
To make this recipe you will need the following ingredients:
- Bananas
- Eggs
- Vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil
- Buttermilk
- Granulated sugar
- Brown sugar
- All purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Fine salt
- Chocolate
- Powdered sugar
- Butter, softened
- Milk or cream
For the cake: You start by preheating the oven to 175C / 350F. Then you grease and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl, mash the bananas and stir in the eggs, vanilla, vegetable oil and buttermilk until combined. Add all of the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick/cake tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Once cooked, take out of the oven and let cool for 3-5 minutes in the baking pan before removing to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
For the frosting: You place all of the ingredients in a food processor and pulse to incorporate. Then process for a few seconds until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed and pulse again until combined.
You can also use a stand mixer or handheld mixer to make your frosting.
Spread the chocolate frosting on top of the banana cake and garnish with extra banana slices.

Notes & Substitutions
Vegetable Oil: You can use melted butter either salted or unsalted instead of vegetable oil in this recipe.
Buttermilk: Yogurt or sour cream is a great substitute for buttermilk.
Sugar: I use 50/50 granulated sugar and brown sugar (either dark or light). But you can also use 300 gr / 1 ½ cup of just either one of them.
Baking Soda: You can also use baking powder or 50/50 baking soda and baking powder.
Add In Ideas: Try adding your favorite banana cake ingredients to the recipe. Such as: cinnamon or other spices, chopped nuts, raisins or other dried fruits.
Chocolate: The frosting requires melted and cooled chocolate. I use either semi sweet or dark chocolate but you can also use milk chocolate.
Frosting
This banana cake is heavy on the frosting but you can also use less frosting if you prefer. OR skip the frosting, the cake is delicious either way!
Other frosting ideas for this cake would be: vanilla frosting, cream cheese frosting or chocolate fudge frosting.

(melted and cooled)
520 gr / 4 cups powdered sugar
340 gr / 1 ½ cup butter, softened
4–6 tablespoons milk or cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Extra banana slices, for garnish
Instructions
Banana Cake:
Preheat oven to 175C / 350F. Grease and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
I like to put aluminum foil loosely over the top of the cake for the last 5-10 minutes of the cooking time so that it doesn’t get too dark.
Once cooked, take out of the oven and let cool for 3-5 minutes in the baking pan before removing to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Make sure to cool the cake completely before frosting.
Chocolate Frosting:
Place all of the ingredients in a food processor and pulse to incorporate. Then process for a few seconds until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed and pulse again until combined. You can also use a stand mixer or handheld mixer to make your frosting.
Spread the chocolate frosting on top of the banana cake and garnish with extra banana slices. Slice and serve.
