This simple but yet delicious Caramel Apple Skillet Cake is the perfect weekend treat that your family is going to love. It’s unbelievably easy and is ready to serve in under 1 hour. All of the sweet fall flavors combined in this one pan caramel apple skillet cake.

When I knew I wanted to create a recipe for apple skillet cake it took me a while to decide how I was going to do it. They are often served with a glaze, either maple or caramel. Or sometimes even frosting or buttercream on top. Which could easily be added to this recipe and it would be delicious. However, I decided to go for a rather simple skillet version of an apple cake. And instead of just putting chopped apples in the batter I caramelize them first and then add them to the batter and bake. The gooey leftover caramel in the pan is also added to the batter which gives the cake a caramelized apple kind of a taste.

Apple Note:

For this recipe I used around 340 gr / 12 oz peeled and diced apples. That is ca 2 large apples or 3 smaller apples. Feel free to add more or less depending on what you have or want to use.

Substitutions:

MILK – If you don’t have whole milk you can substitute it with any other type of milk. You can also use sour cream.

CINNAMON – Instead of cinnamon, you could use nutmeg.

DARK BROWN SUGAR – If you don’t have dark brown sugar, you can sub it with light brown sugar, organic coconut cane sugar, or more amount of granulated sugar.

APPLES – Although it is an apple cake, if your looking for a substitution for the apples. You can use pears. Caramelized pears are also delicious.

Ingredients

Caramel Apples:
30 gr / 2 tbsp salted butter
50 gr / ¼ cup dark brown sugar
340 gr / 12 oz apples peeled and diced

Apple Skillet Cake:
115 gr / ½ cup salted butter
150 gr / ¾ cup granulated sugar
150 gr / ¾ cup dark brown sugar
3 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
60 ml / ¼ cup whole milk
195 gr / 1 ½ cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 175C / 350 F.

For The Caramel Apples:

Melt the butter in a 10 inch oven safe skillet over medium high heat. Stir in the dark brown sugar and diced apples until sugar has melted and apples start to soften and caramelize. About 4-5 minutes.

Take off the heat and let cool down to room temperature.

For The Apple Skillet Cake:

In a stand mixer beat the butter until creamy. Add in granulated sugar and dark brown sugar. Mix until light and fluffy.

Add eggs one by one, beating in between.

Then beat in the vanilla extract and milk.

Mix together flour, baking powder and cinnamon in a medium sized bowl.

Slowly mix in the flour mixture to the wet ingrediments until just combined.

With a spatula gently fold in the caramelized apple mixture. (Make sure the mixture is not too hot still)

Pour the batter back into the 10 inch oven safe skillet.

Bake for 35 minutes. Or until top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.

Take out of the oven and let cool down for 3-5 minutes before serving.

Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
